In September 2018, twelve students came together to form the Recreation Agency: a non-governmental body tasked with re-imagining Gateway Park (a vast plot of land at the base of the Oakland Bay Bridge) and the future of leisure. This project re-conceptualizes the apartment unit as a venue for recreation. As mobility and energy levels decrease with age, seniors often find themselves confined to home. Students and young professionals, burnt out from school and work, also sometimes choose to “stay in” as opposed to “go out”. Turns out young and old have something in common. All units are two-stories high with senior bedrooms on the first floor, student bedrooms upstairs, and a spacious double height living space tying the two together.
