"Unfolding Events"

School: UC Berkeley

Year: 2020

Course: Timber construction

This project began as an exploration of folded plate CLT structures. Inspired by the research done at the Laboratory for Timber Construction at EPFL, we set out to design, test and build a prototype plywood pavilion in the Wurster Courtyard. As we were about to submit our proposal envisioning a magical threshold to the Room One Thousand design competition, the shelter-in-place order took effect across the Bay Area.

Suddenly unable to prototype joints or build models, we pivoted our focus to designing two conceptual pavilions that responded to the crisis. The following pavilion is made up of four sets of identical plywood triangles. The spiky maroon enclosure is just large enough for a person to step inside. The interior is lined with blue velvet, contributing to a somber and muted ambiance. The roof has a small aperture in the center, which allows the light to seep in.
